"Dol" komedie in Meulteater

Dié skreeusnaakse komedie handel oor 'n konserwatiewe pa  (Pieter Strümpher) se stryd om begrip te hê vir sy eienaardige gesin se hedendaagse

KALWERLIEFDE. Karel Klynhuis (Allen Knibbs) moet net keer as Nikki (Minette Wentzel) haar ewige liefde verklaar in 'n toneel uit "Doller as Kop-af".

lewenstyl: sy aktrise-vrou (Celia Kok), drie eksentrieke dogters (Minette Wentzel, Gwen Knörr en Margaux Raats) en platsak-skoonseuns (albei vertolk deur Mario D'Emiljo).

Voeg daarby 'n beroemde sniksanger (Allen Knibbs), 'n verbouereerde huishoudster (Biebie Brits), 'n nuuskierige joernalis met 'n probleem... (Ian Anderson), 'n sielkundige vol planne (Klaus Schnack) en 'n ander vrou... en u is verseker van 'n aand propvol opwinding.

Die regie is behartig deur Pieter Strümpher, bygestaan deur Joey de Koker.

Kaartjies is beskikbaar by Print Right (872-7209) teen R25 elk.  Saterdag is daar 'n middagvertoning om 15:00 teen R20 per persoon.


Jubilant festival concert

RADIO presenter Fanie Smit is bringing his Jubilate Festival of choral singing to the Groote Kerk on Friday 30 May in conjunction with FMR 101.3 FM Stereo.

The festival, which begins at 19:30, will feature some of greater Cape Town's best choirs - the Stellenbosch University Choir, Pro Cantu Youth Choir, Stellenberg Girl's Choir and the City of Tygerberg Choir.

They'll sing  a capella and together in a massed choir of 300 voices with the Stellenbosch Symphonic Winds, which will be conducted by Albert Engel. 

Conductors are André van der Merwe and Edward Aitcheson, and works include excerpts from The Deutsche Messe by Franz Schubert, the first part of the Gloria by John Rutter, Bach's Lobet den Herrn and a host of other popular works. 

The Ave Maria will also be on the programme, along with one of the most famed songs from My Fair Lady, "I could have danced all night".

While secular now in content, the festival was born a year ago in Pretoria out to mark the 30th anniversary of Fanie Smit's popular radio programme "Loof die Here" on RSG. 

It has since spread successfully to Durban, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Potchefstroom and now to the Groote Kerk, Cape Town.

Feeskunstenaars gesoek

DIE Paarl Liggiefees sal vanjaar op twee aande, Donderdag 4 Desember en Vrydag 5 Desember, plaasvind.

Die Donderdagaand sal 'n meer gewyde Kersprogram aangebied word onder leiding van Michelle Pietersen.

Die Vrydag is 'n partytjie-aand waar musiekgroepe en straatmusikante optree en waar daar vermaak vir die kinders sal wees. Dit staan onder leiding van Gustav Skippers.

Belangstellendes wat by die program betrokke wil wees, insluitend mimiek- en ander straatkunstenaars asook poppekas en kinderteater, kan Paarl Toerisme (872-4842) of die HOP-kantoor (862-2889) kontak.

Festival of Beethoven concerts

BEETHOVEN will be the focus of the Cape Philharmonic's next concerts - a festival of all his piano concerti played back to back by Anton Nel, one of South Africa's most illustrious musical exports, plus the Choral Symphony and Choral Fantasia, all at the Cape Town City Hall.

The festival takes place tonight, Friday and Thursday 29 May. The choral concert will be repeated at the Endler Hall on Friday 6 June.

Subscription seats with a 10 per cent discount for the three Cape Town concerts are on sale now.

The first concert comprises Piano Concerti no 1 in C; no 3 in B flat and no 4 in G, while the second concert comprises no 3 in C minor and no 5, "Emperor". The conductor will be Arjan Tien.

The choral concert will be directed by Bernhard Gueller and will feature the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town with soloists who include Isabelle van Zyl, Collen Tontsi and Brad Liebl in Symphony no 9, known as the Choral Symphony.

 Pianist Graham Fitch will be the soloist in the Fantasia for Piano, Chorus and Orchestra on the same programme. There will be no platform seats for this concert.

Tickets are from R70 to R95 in Cape Town and R40 to R85 at the Endler.

New play looks at crime

A NEW play, entitled "Ijumpile Lendaba" will be performed by the Desmond Tutu High School Drama Group with People's Productions in the school hall

on 30 May.

The play looks at the unacceptable crime levels in the townships.

The story is about a group of young gangsters (Amarhanga Boys) who have crime connections with certain policemen.

Every time there are cases against "Amarhanga boys" those dockets are destroyed by policemen who are in cahoots with them, but then they start to double-cross one another.

The play was created by Thami Mbongo (who also directs) with co-writers Siyabulela Bin Mcitheka and Inathi Dingashe.

The play features fresh young talent from Desmond Mpilo Tutu High, Ihlumelo Junior Secondary and Mbekweni.

Mbongo hopes to take the production on a Boland tour. They also hope to perform at arts festivals at Peninsula Technikon and Artscape. Book with Thando Baliso, 083-672-5830.
