Winter lecture series in Paarl |

A SERIES of lectures will be presented at the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl during August by the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation.
On 5 August, Len Raymond will present "Porcelain at the Cape" and the evidence as found on old sites, shipwrecks and information taken from inventories of the time. Every piece of porcelain taken to Europe came via the Cape, but what is interesting is that Chinese domestic ware never reached Europe - it remained for local consumption.
* On 12 August John Martin will give a talk on Old Paarl and the effects of the Group Areas Act on communities in the town. The legislation and general government policy at the time caused unprecedented social upheaval among thousands of people, the effects of which are still being felt.
* On 19 August, Prof Isak Rust will talk on geological information regarding meteorites and their impacts on Southern Africa.
* On 26 August at the Paarl Museum, historian Taffy Shearing will give a talk on the Boer War and the involvement of the people of Paarl. At the start of the 20th century, Paarl was a royalist town and many of its inhabitants served under the British.
Especially members of the Coloured community of Paarl are invited to attend as many of their men served in regiments such as the Cape Volunteers, the Western Province Mounted Rifles, the Drakenstein District Mounted Troops and the Paarl Town Guard. Special attention will be given to Paarl Ambulance's adventures at the front.

DRAMA, kabaret, boekepret, musiek, voorlesings, uitstallings en nog veel meer... dis wat jy alles vanjaar tydens Afrikaansweek van 9 tot 15 Augustus in die Paarl kan geniet.
Die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en verskeie instansies in die Paarl span weer saam om Taaldag te herdenk - die dag waarop die Genootskap vir Regte Afrikaners (GRA) in 1875 gestig is om hulle te beywer vir die erkenning en bevordering van Afrikaans.
Kom luister na 'n unieke gesamentlike optrede deur twee bekende Wes-Kaapse kore, geniet 'n ete of 'n glasie wyn terwyl jy na interessante kunstenaars luister, en sorg dat jy 'n draai gooi by al die uitstallings.
Die museum bied vanjaar ook self vyf produksies aan - die Alles in Afrikaans musiekfees op Taaldag, 14 Augustus, met Dozi en ander bekende en opkomende kunstenaars, die drama "Die Meester" met Johann Nel, die dansdrama "Raka" met leerders van Noorder-Paarl Sekondêr, tienertoneel deur ons eie dramagroep Museum Muse, asook "Boekepret" by skole in Paarl-Oos in samewerking met Human & Rousseau.

'n LEERKRAG en oudleerder van die Frank Pietersen Musieksentrum in die Paarl, Inge Pietersen, is gekies om saam met die Kaapse Filharmoniese Orkes te speel in die 2004 Artscape/Kaapse Filharmoniese Orkes Jeugmusiekfees wat op Donderdag 29 Julie om 20:00 in die Kaapstad stadsaal gehou word.
Dr Leslie B Dunner van die Verenigde State sal die orkesleier vir die geleentheid wees.
Inge is eerste op die program, en speel die eerste beweging van Mozart se Fluitkonsert in D majeur.

THE Réunion Island Polyphonic Orchestra performs tomorrow night at the Barnyard Theatre at Bridge House.
The 45 music pupils, aged between 13 and 20, are ambassadors representing Réunion's musical youth through their numerous trips abroad.
They will be performing a wide range of music from Latin to jazz, from light classical music to music from films and well-known international melodies.
Tickets are R45 (senior citizens R30 & students R15).
Rock and roll
* On Saturday 31 July producer Duck Chowles presents a tribute to the late and great legends of rock and roll - dedicated to those late musicians and singers who remain etched in our memory because of the mark they made on both the musical world and society.
In "Forever Young" De Wet Wraight pays tribute to his favourite artists Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, John Lennon and the King himself.
Desiree Henning portrays the ultra-sexy Marilyn Monroe, Dusty Springfield and Janis Joplin.
All in all, this nostalgic trip back in time, is a two hour non-stop party that cannot be missed.

KAMERMUSIEK van die hoogste gehalte, uitgevoer deur gevierde Suid-Afrikaanse musici, is op die spyskaart by die Nederburg-opstal op 1 Augustus om 17:00 met die Rosamunde Strykkwartet.
Die lede van die kwartet is Denise Sutton, konsertmeester van die Suid-Afrikaanse Kamerorkes, Suzanne Swanepoel (viool), Jeanne-Louise Lombard (altviool) en Marian Lewin (tjello).
Die program bestaan uit Haydn se Kwartet Opus 76 nr 4 ("The Sunrise"), Dvorak se "American" Kwartet en Schubert se Kwartet in D mineur ("Death and the Maiden").
Kaartjies kos R125 en sluit 'n ligte ete en wyne in.
