Stokkiesdraaifees begin

DIE Stokkiesdraaifees op Wellington begin vandag en duur tot Sondag.

Van die beste produksies van die Klein Karoo Kunstefees sal te sien wees (sien bl 21).

Dit sluit in Kanna hy ko hystoe, Tip, Raaiselkind, Anna se Engel (met Pedro Kruger), Lagga (met Soli Philander) en Een Vers Job met Deon Bosman.

Daar is 'n hondekompetisie, kindervermaak asook 24Seven uiterste .

WENNERS. Die Zing-wenners Johny en Vivian tree is Saterdag om 20:00 op by Boland stadion.

avontuur vir die wat jonk is van gees. Vir groot en klein is daar die Pik-en-Sluk kostent, massas kunsvlyt en vele meer.

Vrydagaand word die Tassenbergfees tot middernag aangebied in die Boland stadion met onder andere Kurt Darren, Piet Botha, Karen Zoid en Skallabrak.

Saterdag is daar heeldag aktiwiteite in die stadion met stoepstories, sangers en klopse, 'n kunsmark, mallemeule, abseilmuur en hondevertoning.

Daar is ook 'n pretdraf, motorfietsrit en vroue 4x4. By Hugenote Laer is daar rollerhokkie en skaatsplankry.

Om 11:00 word die Famsa kiskarresies in Genl Hertzoglaan aangebied.

Saterdagaand tree verskeie kunstenaars op in Boland stadion, insluitend Blackie Swart, Francois Henning, Zing-finaliste Johny en Vivian asook Andrew Roos, Lochner de Kock en Richard van der Westhuizen.

Kaartjies kan by Computicket of by die Wellington Feeskantoor (873-3988) bespreek word.

Die fees se naam het sy oorsprong in die dae toe wingerdstokkies met rafia geheg is vir enting. Omdat die kinders uit die skool moes bly om te help het die term "stokkiesdraai" vir afwesigheid ontstaan


Cape horse trials now at Spier

MORE than 100 of the country's top equestrians will ride in the Cape Horse Trials at the Spier Estate in Stellenbosch over the weekend of November 1 and 2.

The trials, formerly known as the Sappi horse trials, have moved from Vergelegen to the grounds of Spier.

The format of the event remains the same - dressage and some Novice Showjumping on Saturday and a day of fun on the Sunday, with the cross-country and showjumping.

There will be dog arenas with WP Dog Showjumping Championships,  Jack Russell Championships, dog displays and an unusual craft market comprising Vuka Creations and the Khayelitsha crafters.

All the top riders will be there, Graham Wynn, Martyn Swanepoel amongst them and keen to try a virgin course which was designed by Tim Payne and been built from scratch, water jump included. by a team under the direction of Johnny Perreira.

They cater for children with clowns, face painters and a jumping castle, plus a sort of do-it-yourself vaulting where a top German instructor, Dorothea van Vuuren, will show how to vault a horse (vaulting is basically gymnastics on horse back).

There will also be pony rides and entertainment throughout the day.

A marquee with Spier salads and delicacies, boerewors rolls wines and other refreshments for sale will also be provided for the benefit of visitors.

In keeping with Spier's policy, no food or drink may be brought on to the premises, and no dogs other than those on show will be permitted.

Visitors entering Spier from the Annandale Road will have horse and carriage shuttles to take them the short distance to the main arena.

Entrance on Saturday is free. Tickets for the fun day on Sunday are R40 at the gate from 09:00. Children under 12 free, pensioners R25.

Musiekprogram vir Psalmboek

'n LUISTERRYKE musiekprogram word Sondagmiddag om 15:00 in die Toringkerk, Paarl, aangebied ter viering van die amptelike ingebruikneming van die Psalmboek van die Gereformeerde Kerke in SA.

Op die program is bydraes deur die bekende sangeres Hanneli Rupert en die orrelis Diederick Basson, asook voorlesings deur akteur Johann Nel. 

Die program word verder opgeluister met optredes van die Paarlse Kamerkoor en gemeentekore uit die streek.

Orreliste van gereformeerde gemeentes van die Boland en Skiereiland gaan die begeleidings waarneem van 'n program wat hoofsaaklik uit sang en Skriflesings gaan bestaan. 

'n Kort geleentheidswoord sal deur dr Pieter Bingle gelewer word.  Navrae by Etresia Hendricks (872-4648) of Helene Jooste (863-1770).


Orpheus Ensemble by
La Motte

DIE Orfeus Ensemble, bestaande uit klarinettis Matthew Reid en tjellis Anmari van der Westhuizen met Lisa Garson voor die klavier, is op Saterdag 8 November op La Motte.

Hulle speel werke wat vir hierdie ongewone kombinasie geskryf is. Hoewel daar reeds in die jare sewentienhonderd vir hierdie ensemble-genre geskryf is, het dit eers in die neëntiende eeu werklik gewildheid begin geniet. 

Die ensemble speel Brahms se bekende Trio, opus 114, asook Zemlinksy se Trio vir Klarinet, Tjello en Klavier in D mineur.

Sover vasgestel kan word, sal dit die eerste keer wees dat hierdie werk in Suid-Afrika in die openbaar gespeel word.

Die konsert word in La Motte se historiese kelder met sy rustige atmosfeer en uitmuntende akoestiek aangebied.

By hulle aankoms word gaste met 'n drankie verwelkom en na afloop van elke konsert kan hulle die kunstenaars ontmoet te same met heerlike La Motte wyne en ligte versnaperings.

Die konsert begin om 19:00 en toegang is R85 per persoon. Bespreek by die proelokaal op La Motte, of by 876-3114/9 (Comari).


Rock at Barnyard

THE Barnyard Theatre at Bridge House is set to stage the rock 'n roll music revival show "Roll Over Beethoven" to mark the official opening of the theatre for two nights only on Friday and Saturday (Saturday by invitation only) . 

It is a rock revival in which the spirit of Beethoven appears on stage to introduce classically inspired rock numbers from the past century, traditional Irish music and snippets from great classical overtures. 

The cast consists of Paul du Toit (as Beethoven), Amanda Tiffin and TJ Simons on vocals, with Olivia Van Gaas on violin, Shannon Mowday on saxophone, Celeste Williams on keyboards, Andy Murray on lead guitar, Danny Gallagher on drums and Rob Stemmett on bass.

Hugenote nasate op Franschhoek

DIE gemeenskap van Franschhoek en die Hugenote Vereniging span saam om dié naweek, Hervormingsnaweek, 'n gesamentlike fees rondom die Hugenote Monument te hou.

Die vieringe sal feestelik wees met musiek, 'n rose-tentoonstelling, 'n kinderkunstentoonstelling, asook 'n vlytmark van handgemaakte werk.

Saterdag word 'n vryheidsvlam aangesteek word om die oorwinning van die vryheid van geloof en ook vryheid van menseregte te vier.

Die Hugenote Vereniging se jaarvergadering vind ook dié dag plaas.

'n Straatoptog deur die hoofstraat na die monument sal 'n hoogtepunt wees waar die gemeenskap, skole en kerke, en Hugenotefamilies met hul familievaandels onder musiekbegeleiding na die monument sal stap.

Randall Wicomb bied 'n konsert met Griekwapsalms en Adam Small verse Saterdag om 19:30 by die museum aan.

Daar sal ook 'n orrel-en-trompetkonsert deur Zorada Temmingh en Mike Blake aangebied word Sondag om 16:00 in die Franschhoek NG Kerk.

'n Spesiale diens vir alle denominasies word ook Sondag in die NG Kerk gehou. 


Franschhoek Country Fair

FRANSCHHOEK opens its heart to the public this weekend with its annual country fair in aid of the Franschhoek Conservation Trust.

The two-day country fair with flowers, food and fun, will take place at the Franschhoek Town Hall from 10:00 to 17:00.

"The country fair will showcase our valley's talented artists and crafters in a host of products from ceramics, pots and paintings to soaps, kites and candles," says Shirley Parkfelt, chairman of the Franschhoek Conservation Trust. 

There will be demonstrations of silk weaving, cooking, pottery and flower arranging both days, as well as a flower exhibition and competition for both adults and children.

Antiques will be on sale, as well as a wide variety of food from calamari and kebabs from the first vintages of five wines launched by La Chataigne, to olives, trout, pancakes, plants, pies and preserves and strawberries and cream. 

There'll also be a jumping castle for children. Entrance is free. The Huguenot Memorial Museum will present a festival of flowers as well. Inquiries: 876-3603/876-2768.


Rock me Amadeus kom
Paarl toe

SONDAGAAND 2 November gaan die Paarl geruk word deur die rock 'n roll-klanke van "Rock me Amadeus". Dit word aangebied in Grande Roche se Amfiteater.

Dié baie gewilde opvoering word tans dwarsdeur Suid-Afrika aangebied en vind byval by oud en jonk. 

"Rock me Amadeus" is 'n gulde geleentheid om Duck Chowles en sy groep van nege top musikante in aksie te ervaar.

Kaartjies is beskikbaar teen R130 elk wat 'n vingerete en drankies insluit vanaf 18:00. Die vertoning begin om 19:30.

Bespreek by Eunice of Elma by Definitely Different te Hoofstraat 82, Paarl, of kontak hulle by 863-0397 of 082-808-1114. Die opbrengs gaan vir Hoër Jongenskool se musiekdepartement.
