Community workers for Drakenstein

[ Top ]

SIXTEEN Community Development Workers (CDW's) recently started their learnership programme with Drakenstein Municipality.

This programme is a national project initiated by President Thabo Mbeki and is one component of the government's multi-pronged approach to eradicate poverty in communities.

COMMUNITY WORKERS. Mayor Herman Bailey (front third from right) with the community wor- kers.

It is aimed at promoting effective access to services and government programmes for all South Africans, especially the poorest and most vulnerable members of society, said James Rhoda, head of the Community Development section of the Drakenstein Municipality.

He said the CDW's will provide an important link between the different spheres of government and local communities.

"To coin a phrase: A commitment to making this project work is ultimately a commitment to 'building a better life for all'."

The learnership programme was launched earlier this month by Marius Fransman, Minister of Local Government and Housing in the Western Cape. At the launch he reflected on a "new cadre of workers who will bring governance to the people, eradicate poverty and improve service delivery".

This new project is now being rolled out in the Drakenstein municipal area.

The CDW learners started their process of orientation with the municipality on 14 February and will soon be deployed in various communities.

There they will apply some of the skills they have already learnt, collate research information, as well as assist communities.

Rhoda said he welcomes any information, assistance and advice that will help the CDW learners in making a success of the programme, as well as improving service delivery.

He can be contacted on 807-4500.

Other entertainment at this high-profile, glittering charity event in aid of the Organ Donor Foundation, is being presented by Irit Noble, Gloria Bosman and André Schwartz (of Phantom of the Opera fame) and accompanied by a well-known big band.

Michael Mol will act as MC and also present the Nederburg Fashion TV service that highlights snippets from the runway, interviews with designers and guests throughout the day.

Whenever guests feel the urge to nibble and sip, they can choose for themselves from the fabulous culinary creations presented at six culinary pavilions, each served with a fine Nederburg wine.

The Organ Donor Foundation has been the beneficiary of the Nederburg Auction charity fashion event for the past ten years. Last year's event raised R270 000, making Nederburg the organisation's single largest donor.

Lotto help seniors

[ Top ]
