CHILDREN of Drakenstein have lost their best friend. Dr Beryl Leibrandt, principle paediatrician at Paarl Hospital, has resigned.
And although she resigned three months ago, no replacement has been appointed.
Dr Leibrandt has been in charge of the children's inpatient wards at Paarl Hospital and children's outpatients at Paarl East Hospital.
She has had a major impact in developing the health care facilities since January 1991, ensuring the health for children who cannot afford private health care.
She built up the paediatric service to include an asthma, neuro-developmental, cardiac and infectious diseases clinic.
She has been involved in the education of the nursing staff, running a peri-natal education program and encouraging nurses to do the paediatric training course.
She taught junior doctors and assisted them to do the post graduate diploma in child health.
"She is totally committed to a good quality service," her colleagues praised her.
"And it is with unrelenting stamina that she insists on the correct treatment of patients.
"She has even been criticised by the health administrators that the standard of care of children in Paarl Hospital is too high and that the infant mortality rate is too low."
According to her colleagues she has "soldiered on during times of staffing crisis and budgetary constraints."
"With typical consideration she gave notice three months ago to enable the administrators to find a replacement.
"But so typical of the beaurocratic red tape that she has had to battle against, the process for advertising and filling of her post has only started now." |
