Paarl humiliates champ

[ Top ]

THE Novel Paarl cricket team, the only team with a full quota of points in the Premier League, inflicted a humiliating eight wicket defeat on the current Boland champions, Hermanus, in Hermanus on Saturday.

The Paarl team is still unbeaten after bowling out the home team for only 125.

Coach Anwell Newman (5/36) was the destroyer in chief, after opening bowler Denver van Reenen (2/24) had made the early breakthroughs. Newman failed to make an impact in his first spell, but came back superbly from the opposite end, with figures of 5/17 in 10 overs of which three were maidens, ripping the heart out of the Hermanus batting line-up to become the undisputed Man of the Match.

The hard hitting Stephen Forde, WP/Boland player Con de Lange, as well as Wayne Truter were among his victims, after Van Reenen trapped the

BLITSIG.

aggressive Rejuan Botha leg before wicket in the seventh over of the day.

With Ultallyn Ernstzen (3/40) also bowling impressively, the Boland captain Wallace Albertyn (23 not out) ran out of batting partners by the 40th over.

Opening batsman Bobby Nicholson (29) gave the Novel Paarl innings a kick-start with four boundaries, but it was the unbeaten 54 run third wicket partnership between Dave Callaghan (39 not out) and Wesley Euley (46 not out) which saw the home team's bowlers throw in the towel.

Albertyn and De Lange failed to bother the visiting batsmen with the new ball, and it was left to Joshua Swanepoel (2/28) to give his team a glimmer of hope.

Callaghan took his batting average this season to 157 with six stylish boundaries, and with Euley living up to his reputation with six boundaries and two sixes, the Paarlites needed only 29 overs to clinch the match by 14:15, consolidating their position at the top of the log.

Paarl II's youngsters put up their hands in the absence of a number of experienced batsmen at the Parys Grounds on Saturday, scoring 274/6 in a devastating batting display against Hermanus.

Electing to bowl first on a perfect batting strip, the visitors were punished by the 19-year-old Graham Adams (95), who hit six boundaries and four sixes in a quest for his maiden century.

Good support from the reliable William Wilson (33), Cameron Cupido (25) and Alfredo Adams (48 not out) put the match out of reach for the visitors.

Bennie du Preez (26) and Piet Geldenhuys (20) offered some resistance, but their team collapsed for 96, giving Paarl victory by a massive 178 runs.

Opening bowler Heinrich Daniels (4/19) continued his good form, ably assisted by Alfredo Adams (3/20) and Richard Cunningham (3/20).

Easterns forfeited points to Paarl III, while Ceres forfeited points to Paarl IV.

Paarl derby

The Novel Paarl team hosts Young People's Cricket Club at the Parys Grounds in their annual derby match on Saturday.

The home team, leading the log comfortably after seven successive victories, destroyed their traditional rivals at the House of Pain last season, and Young Peoples were lucky to salvage a draw at Dal Josaphat in the return match, when Justin Ontong (79) was dropped in the slips on zero.

Peoples will make a mistake if they focus all their attention on former Protea International Dave Callaghan, as Wesley Euley, with a batting average of 97 for Paarl this season, is also in devastating form.

Edwin Jacobs, Hubert Ontong and Henley Julies will be expected to keep the Paarl scoring rate in check, but will have to pull out all the stops if they hope to contain the rampant Novel Paarl batsmen.

Young Peoples' captain Rupert Bailey has been their mainstay with the bat, but he will need solid support from the likes of Brendon Adams, Winston Fortuin and Quinton Kannemeyer.

However, the Paarl bowling attack has this season been largely responsible for their top of the log position, and Young Peoples' 10th position on the log suggests that an upset is unlikely.

Swart naweek vir Wellington

[ Top ]

Mbekweni Sundown honoured

[ Top ]

THE brilliant season of local soccer team, Mbekweni Sundowns, received further lustre when they received a prestigious accolade from the provincial soccer governing body.

Sundowns was crowned the best team of the year in the Western Province by the WP affiliate of the South African Football Association (WP SAFA).

During a gala event which was held in Woodstock on Saturday the Mbekweni team was described as "dazzling".

"The winners of this category are popularly known for their Brazilian flair of playing, they are a household name in the Western Cape Region and in South Africa as a whole - it comes as no surprise to see them playing in front of a capacity crowd wherever they play.

"Players such as Siphelo Skafu, Luvuyo Jalamba and Erica Maxamba are well-known because of their dazzling skills and they have been very instrumental in the success of Sundowns."

Sundowns played in the Castle League's third divison last season, winning 27 of their 38 matches. The team scored 113 goals finishing with 91 league points.

The Mbekweni team then went on to win the national amateur club championships and won the Castle League after beating Soweto United 2-0 in the play-offs in the Limpopo province.

This coming season Sundowns will face stiffer competition in the Vodacom Second Division league, hoping to secure promotion to the Mvela Golden League First Division.

As an added bonus the team's coach, Robert Meyer, was adjudged the best 2004 coach in the WP SAFA region.

"Our coach of 2004 has taken his club from the backstreets of the Mbekweni township, winning the Castle League, and then went on to national championship winning every game in the national tournament. With his team of local township footballers coupled with a blend of youngsters from other areas, he put together a football ensemble that had an unbeatable look about it," the announcer said.

He added: "At the national tournament he lost three players to Premier Soccer League clubs. His team however sparkled, playing an entertaining brand of kwaito football."

Meyer who has coached the team for the past three years is described as "one of the hardest working coaches who sees his players as young men who must become outstanding citizens. Discipline and dedication is his main coaching terminology."

Since their establishment in 1990, Mbekweni Sundowns has achieved several successes: League winners of Paarl Football Association (1991), National winners of Smirnoff League (1992), Runners-up National Sparletta Competition (1994), Winners of the Novel Ford Easter Tournament (1998), Winners of the Toyota League (2000), Runners-up in Castle League (2002), winners of the Paarl FA competition (2003), and winners of the Castle League (2004).

The club could not have reached these heights however, was it not for sponsorship of Omnicar in Paarl. The commitment and dedication with which Dennis Minitzer and his company has supported Mbekweni Sundowns the last couple of years has played a huge role in the team's success.

The dream of every player in a team like Mbekweni Sundowns is to represent their country in the 2010 World Cup Soccer Tournament which will be hosted in SA. Their victory this year is already part of the Sundowns-team's dream towards 2010.
