They will be part of a hundred youthful violinists who will appear on stage at the opening of the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

They will perform a piece called "Journey", composed by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder.

The other players will be from Bridge House School and Beau Soleil Music Centre.

Vanessa Mae will be the highlight of the evening and she will make time to meet the learners and pose for a photo at the rehearsal tomorrow.

THIS year's Sasol National Youth Orchestra will give two concerts in Johannesburg and Pretoria at the end of the intensive annual training course - which has drawn musicians from around the country, including violinist Petrus Coetzee of Wellington.

Petrus takes violin lessons at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl.

Under the direction of Israeli conductor Omri Hadari, the 75-member Sasol NYO will play 'About Nothing' by Peter Louis van Dijk, the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no 2 featuring the brilliant young pianist Inette Swart, and the Symphony no 9, From the New World, by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak.

The concerts will take place at the Linder Auditorium in Parktown on Friday 11 July and at Unisa on Saturday 12 July, both at 19:30.

On Saturday afternoon, the three other ensembles formed from 250 musicians at the course will perform at the Diepkloof Hall in Soweto at 14:00, sponsored by the De Beers Fund, and again on Sunday at the Musaion on the Pretoria University campus at 14:00.
