A WORKSHOP for teachers on animal awareness and resource building was held at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl recently. It was organised by a partnership comprising the Western Cape Education Department, Cheetah Outreach and the Smithsonian Conservation Research Centre in Washington, USA. The partnership was established in 2001 with the main aim to bring environmental science and technology into the classrooms of previously disadvantaged communities. Jaleela Richards, a teacher at Orleansvale Primary, organised the workshop. She is involved in developing teacher resources under the auspices of the partnership, and heads the cluster group for this project in the Paarl area. Teachers first listened to Sandy Ball, a psyochologist from the USA, talk about animal phobias in general. Hailey Summerford and Blake Sills from Fossil Rims in Texas, USA, presented animal activities to use in the classroom. Dawn Glover and Desire Adams presented a cheetah and an associated lesson module for Grade IV. Cheetah Outreach's hand-reared cheetah paid a courtesy visit at the end of the presentation. There were also live demonstrations with a Spotted Eagle Owl and live snakes. Two local teachers, Brenda Simani and Teboho Khabele, who recently returned from a two-month fellowship at the Smithsonian Institute's Conservation Research Centre, also presented lesson modules. For further information on this project, contact Jaleela Richards on 082-374-6223 or 862-1293. |

A blood donor is someone who helps all kinds of people: short, fat, tall, yellow, brown, red; strangers and loved ones... We are all part of the family of mankind. A donor's precious liquid is there for people who go through windshields or red lights. For someone with cancer, hemophilia, or anemia. Or hepatitis. Or ulcers. For people being operated on. For people defending themselves in a violent society... For people who are almost out of life because they are out of blood. For a little girl who doesn't know that leukemia has happened to her. Or why. For people having open-heart surgery. For people who need a blood donor and also an organ donor - a part as well as a pint - a new heart, a lung or a kidney. For new babies needing new blood. Or new mothers needing a transfusion. For little kids who get into poison or fall onto something sharp. For people that fool around with something that explodes, goes off, bites or shatters. For people burned pretty badly. For daredevils, tree climbers. For people in the wrong place at the wrong time. A blood donor is good for people who are in a lot worse shape than most people you know. Someone somewhere every day needs a little of your blood a lot. To donate blood, phone 871-1030. |

BOWY is a three-year-old toddler who is HIV positive. His father has already died from Aids, and his mother is also infected with the disease and is critically ill. With the numbers of Aids casualties amongst children and adults rising in the Boland, Bowy's tale is no longer unique. However, it has been motivational in setting up the Bowy House HIV/Aids Children's Care Programme in Main Street, Suider Paarl, where toddlers who are in a similar desperate situation will receive treatment, nutrition and love. "We want to improve the quality of life of infants and small children who are afflicted with Hiv/Aids (symptomatic or terminal), whose parents are either deceased or cannot provide proper care for them," explains Hester Veldsman, managing director of Miqlat, a Christian community upliftment and missionary organisation that serves the Drakenstein municipal and surrounding areas. Permission to run the facility has been granted by the Drakenstein Municipality and it is also supported by neighbours. Miqlat was formed in 1994 by a group of volunteers and qualified as a Section 21 non-profit organisation in 2000. It is supported by donations from local churches and individual benefactors, and is staffed by full-time local ministry people as well as volunteers from local and international missionary organisations. The house gives Miqlat the opportunity to centralise and extend the work it has been doing for the past seven years to provide for HIV/Aids children. Bowy House will initially open its doors to only three children because of limited funding. Ultimately it is expected to be the home of ten babies or children with Aids. The waiting list has already grown to 26. It will be supervised by Veldsman as well as a project director, social worker, nursing staff and care providers. The children will be provided with nutrition, health care and heaps of loving attention from the Christian workers and visiting missionaries to the house. Attention will not only be given to their physical needs. "We want the children to achieve the highest possible quality of life and therefore we will also set behavioural and learning goals for each child," says Veldsman. Many doctors and nursing staff have already volunteered their services, while local churches have helped to paint and furnish the home. "We would like the community to become involved in the house by giving donations of clothes, money or food on a continuous basis," says supporter Ilse Kotzé. "Even more important, we'd like to encourage churches, cell groups and even families to commit themselves to care for a child, not only financially, but by becoming personally involved with his/her life," she explains. The name "Miqlat" is drawn from the Old Testament Hebrew word for "place of refuge and hope". "This is what we aim to provide for the people of the greater Drakenstein area," says Veldsman. "We believe that man, made in God's image, is called to wholeness in mind, body and spirit. "Therefore we are committed to restoring, empowering and developing people to their fullest potential to enable them to transform the community in which they live." |
