Paarl mansion goes for R11,6 million on auction

[ Top ]

AN overseas investor snapped-up a luxury Paarl mansion overlooking the Paarl Valley at a public auction last Friday for a price of R11,6 million, the highest price ever paid for a single residential property in Paarl.

The palatial residence of Paarl businessman Nicky Camara, set on an erf of just under 3000 square metres, was auctioned off by the ClareMart Auction Group as part of a liquidation instruction for R9,4 million (gross price R11,6 million).

Bidding started at R4 million and the final price is considered competitive for the area.

Said ClareMart CEO, Jonathan Smiedt, "There was widespread interest from local and up-country buyers with more than 200 people attending the auction.

"Although the conclusion of the sale is subject to acceptance by the liquidators, we are confident that the purchaser of the property has secured an excellent investment for this sought-after property," said Smiedt.

The purchaser is a UK resident, John Downes of Cheshire.

Lawyer Anville van Wyk acted on  behalf of the Briton

Downes, a well-known businessman from the North of England, has interests in finance and commercial radio.

 Sayds Downs, "I have bought the property because I like Paarl very much, and think the house is outstanding.

"Since I have recently sold one of my major businesses, I have much more time on my hands and feel that I would  like to spend some of it in the area."

The split level mansion boasts imported marble finishes, five bedrooms with balconies, a pool with underwater portals, two bars, a gym, sauna and jacuzzi, air conditioning and underfloor heating.

Other features are  security and a surround sound system.

The purchaser has first option on the luxurious furnishing of the house.

A second Camara property, a vacant site in Lady Grey Street near Berg River Boulevard, was sold for R1,2 million (gross).

A third Camara property, the former OK Bazaar building (now Mr Price), was knocked down on auction in October for R8,35 million (nett) to a consortium of local businessmen.

Focus on future of the SA fruit industry

[ Top ]

THE final draft document of a study commissioned by Fruit SA on the future strategy of the fruit industry in South Africa has been released.

According to this report, the overall strategic objective for a future fruit industry involves the creation of a united, non-racial and prosperous industry.

This will be achieved by means of enhancing equitable access and participation, improving global competitiveness and profitability and ensuring sustainable resource management.

A summary of the main strategy document is being distributed to role players, who are invited to provide the project team with feedback by 18 February.

All comments and suggestions will be considered, after which a final document entitled "Future Strategy of the Fruit Industry in South Africa" will be submitted to Fruit SA. It is envisaged that the document will be launched by 18 March.

The final draft report is a strategic, tactical and actionable plan charting a course for the fruit industry for achieving the broad objectives of the Sector Plan for South African Agriculture and New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), to which government and industry would commit their efforts and resources.

The primary objective of the project was to develop a Fruit Industry Plan (FIP) based on mutually accepted actions and guidelines.

Among the topics covered by the report are:

* Accessibility, profitability, sus-

tainability and competitiveness - the major pillars of the strategy

* Broad-based black economic empowerment and land reform

* Rural development

* Human resource development

* Relationships with government

* Research and development and information and technology transfer

* Logistics and infrastructure

* Information

* Marketing and promotion of fruit

* Recommendations on implementation and institutional arrangements.

Stakeholders who wish to receive copies of either the summary or the complete document, in either Afrikaans or English, are invited to contact the project leader André Jooste at the University of the Free State on telephone (051) 401-2824 or joostea.sci@mail. uovs.ac.za.

Stakeholders are also invited to visit the Fruit Industry Plan website at www.fip.co.za.
