Sonder sukses is my eerste klagte reeds in Oktober 2002 geplaas. Ook maar net nog 'n Belastingbetaler |

HOW sad it always is when one or two rotten apples contaminate the whole barrel. With reference to the forensic audit now having to be carried out into irregularities within the municipal Electricity Department, we can only say that in over ten years on a farm in Klein Drakenstein, we can only compliment this department on the quality of service we have received. Whether its a fuse thats "blown", a cable breakage or as in recent times when we've been bedevilled by cable theft, the response has been quick and efficient. The attitude of the electricians has always been pleasant and friendly and normal service has been restored in, we believe, the shortest possible time. One only hopes that in the event of corruption being proven, the culprits be identified and dismissed immediately and that the rest of the department can get back to delivering the first class service as they have done in the past. A Aylward |

TO be a councillor is to care for your community. Or that was the idea, in the good old days. Then party politics entered the scene, and everything changed. Nowadays, councillors are constantly confronted by a conflict of interests between their civic duties and their political affiliations. Presumably this was the dilemma that faced councillor Bernardo Maralack (NNP) last week. He had to chair a public meeting on the development of Die Kraal, the historic former sportsgrounds in Huguenot. At the meeting it was announced that he was in Swellendam for a meeting and would only later join the meeting in Paarl. He never turned up and on the next day, newspapers reported on the failure of the NNP to win the by-election in Swellendam, despite a concerted effort by members from all over. It must be hard to decide between the people who voted you into office and the people who keep you there - especially if you have crossed the floor to another party (possibly against the wishes of the electorate). It was thus refreshing to see the deputy mayor, Anthea Sheldon, rise at the Council meeting on Tuesday and ask for a secret ballot concerning Councillor Titus Williams, so that members could take a decision in line with their moral values, not their politics. This proposal was accepted and in the secret ballot it was decided to request that the Minister discharge Williams from his position. If this means a swing away from pure political decision-making to an acknowledgement of councillors' moral responsibility to voters, this move is to be applauded. |
