AwboardS part of the Police's Sport against Crime project, 50 chess sets where donated to schools in Mbekweni last week.

Insp Laurian Foster of the Mbekweni SAPS heads this project aimed at the pupils of Ihlumelo, Desmond Tutu, Mbekweni Primary, Langabuya and Imboniselo.

A group of 120 children gathered at Desmond Tutu High where the chess sets were handed over and Martin Serfontein of Chess South Africa held a demonstration on how to play this tactical board game.

The chess sets were donated to The Stanley Grundy Chess Foundation through Rotary International, with Serfontein and his wife, Ida of the Boland Chess Union, co-ordinating the local distribution of the sets.

"Chess is the first sport code to be used in this Sport against Crime project, but we would like to have more codes involved," said Foster.

Persons interested can contact her at 807-4327 or 082-850-9614.

Similar donations were made to the other five zones in the Boland Chess Union, said Ida Serfontein.
