REMEMBERING. Hundreds of people attended the recent candlelight memorial in Paarl, commemorating those infected and affected by HIV/Aids. The theme of the day, "Turning Remembrance into Action" found resonance in the words of Rev Stephen Snyman: "Thank God we are not here as victims, but as survivors, victorious survivors". Organisations involved in HIV/Aids projects, as well as individuals lit candles in commemoration.

Ondersteun Toktokkies

[ Top ]

Vir meer inligting, kontak Carl en Marline Ritter (Paarl Toktokkie koördineerders) by 872-7487; Alta Falck (Boland Fondsinsameling koördineerder) by 865-2408 of Mareé Lambrechts (Boland Gesondheidsprogramme koördineerder) by 876-3589.

Hope to the poor

[ Top ]

A PROPOSAL was made at the recent Drakenstein Poverty Indaba that delegates from government institutions sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), committing themselves to alleviating poverty in Drakenstein.

The MoU would be an expression of the will of key government officials to improve the living conditions of poor communities.

It would entail pledging the resources at their disposal and undertaking to restructure local government institutions to reflect the new developmental priorities of their respective departments or units.

The main idea behind the  MoU is to get officials to agree on several key points, the first of which is the Vision for Drakenstein and the Definition of Poverty.

The hope is that the MoU would be followed by agreements on poverty alleviation strategies and programmes.

If the MoU were to become a reality it would mark the beginning of a new and quasi-legal approach to alleviating poverty with clearly delineated obligations and responsibilities for local government departments.

About 107 people, representing government, business, civil society, non-governmental organisations, and faith-based organisations attended the Indaba, hosted by the Drakenstein Municipality.

The main aim of the Indaba was to bring together members of civil society as well as national, provincial and local government in order to agree on a common understanding and approach to poverty alleviation in Drakenstein.
