BEING a fireman is not merely a job for Paarl's new fire chief, it is a calling for which he has as much passion as for a first love.
Derick Damons (38) must be a role model for any aspiring fireman who sees himself standing proud on a red fire engine. Strong, silent, ready to serve.
Damons was born and schooled in Cape Town. He has always had a passion for teaching, but there was no funds for further learning, so after school he found himself a job.
The teenager had to choose between administrative employment and a fireman's job he saw advertised.
"I still don't know why I chose fireman, and for the first years I kept on asking myself - do you really want to be a fireman?"
Then one day, after three years at the fire department, he made his choice. He was going to give back to the fire department what they had given him.
"From that day I became passionate, almost like someone who falls in love. I was proud to be a fireman."
Damons started taking examinations. He trained. And soon he was an officer.
He was still in his teens when he joined the Cape Town fire brigade 19 years ago. Which means that next year he will have had 20 years service in the fire brigade' and he is not even 40 years old.
He moved to Paarl six years ago with his wife Charleen and daughter Darrian (now 9), and became assistant fire chief on 1 May 1997. Their son, Carlyle, made his appearance three years ago.
"It was surely a sign, being appointed on Workers' Day," Damons smiles.
The soft-spoken man not only slotted into the Paarl Fire Brigade smoothly, but also learnt to speak true Afrikaans.
The years in active service had taught him to develop himself.
He has all the necessary qualifications from the fire services institute - the national diploma in fire technology and the national diploma in public management.
He is currently studying for a B Tech in public management and aims to do his honours in public management at the University of Stellenbosch next year.
Damons is a "people-person" and is continuously striving to find ways in which he can be of service to the community.
"Years ago the objective of a fire brigade changed from only fighting fires to include emergency medical care. We became more a service agent to the community."
Right up his sleeve.
"For me it is not merely a job, it is a calling, a beautiful career."
To be appointed fire chief in Paarl was reaching a personal milestone, but, he admits, "it came sooner than I envisaged".
Modestly he attributes his success to men who played a major role in his life - his former chief Donald Sparks, and senior officers at the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service.
They shaped his career in Cape Town, while in Paarl he had the privilege of working with former fire chief Hennie Fouché.
"I salute him, honour and thank him. I learnt from an experienced and knowledgeable person."
But he would not have reached his goal without the continuous support and assistance of his wife Charleen, relatives and friends, Damons stressed.
What you see is what you get with fire chief Damons. He is down to earth, a realist who sets achievable goals.
Damons has a passion for teaching and training and has vowed to continue to sustain a fire service that is equipped with the necessary resources and skilled personnel so that a professional service can be delivered to the community.
Service
"We need to always be a service the community can be proud of."
But even the fire chief cannot be on duty 24 hours of the day, seven days a week.
As district evangelist Damons is very involved, in a leadership position, in the New Apostolic Church where he is responsible for over 2000 members.
He loves mountain hiking, reading novels (Wilbur Smith is an all-time favourite) and listening to jazz and classical music.
He is also an avid swimmer. But no, he has not ventured into the Berg River - he is not yet that much Paarlite! |
