WHAT a pity over-zealous parents stand to destroy a wonderful 74- year-old tradition.
As an East Capie, I was neither in Boy's High nor Gymnasium. I did however attend both the Primary and High School Interschools matches - what a fantastic vibe.
Both "Disillusioned" and "Skaam Oud-Gimmie" have done a great disservice to two great schools.
On face value, "Disillusioned" appeared to be neutral and factually correct, but upon closer inspection, he revealed the true colours of sour grapes.
He is definitely not representative of the BHS parents which I am acquainted with.
As a Paarlite, well acquainted with both schools for more than 20 years, I am sure that "Skaam Oud-Gimmie" does not exist.
No old Gymmie nor Boys' Higher would attack his Alma Mater in the press - there are channels such as Old Boys' organisations for taking up such matters.
Both schools did agree to the choice of referee. Not anybody can act as a referee, they must be a qualified First League referee.
Each school had to appoint a linesman. Boys' Primary appointed the so called "Gymmie linesman". I think this clearly shows what an impeccable track record these gentlemen have.
These are men of integrity and people who have unselfishly dedicated huge amounts of their time to the Paarl community. They certainly do not deserve this treat- ment.
The u.19 referee had no problems, despite being an old Boys' High pupil and "allowing" Boys' High to win. Well played Boys' High.
What passed "Disillusioned" unnoticed, was the fact that the Gimmie's u.13 team started practising very hard from the beginning of the year. They also have beaten teams this season which have beaten Boys Primary.
Three lessons: never underestimate your opponents (even if you did beat them from u.7-u.11), underdogs with an incredible desire to win can be very "gutsy" opponents (even if not as talented), and true sportsmen do not blame the referee when things do not go their way.
Long live Interschools!
