 Letters - Briewe

Our leaders are not setting example

[ Top ]

WITH all the hype, drama, mud-slinging - let's not forget carpet-crossing - and general confusion preceding the second democratic elections in our country, we are approaching anarchy in this country.

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little over 500 employees that has the following statistics: 29 have been accused of spousal abuse; 7 have been arrested for fraud; 19 have been accused of writing bad cheques; 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses; 3 have done time for assault; 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad debt; 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges; 8 have been arrested for shoplifting; 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits; 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year.

Can you guess which organisation this is? And locally things are not much better.

Tragically our leaders are anything but models of decorum. Is it any wonder that the citizens follow 'Simple Simon says' and we are statistically the leaders in such pursuits as rape, murder per capita, grievous bodily assault, fraud?

More is the pity that the political parties are focusing on verbally abusing one another and wording legislation that politicians are in any case magically exempt from.

The energy used in name-calling and debating laws (that only one in a hundred statistically obey anyway) could have been better expended in creating jobs, clearing the housing backlog and shaping parliament up/shipping criminals out.

South Africa may as well follow the lead from elsewhere and elect an actor/wrestler/beauty queen/prostitute/body builder or any visiting estra-terrestrial as leader.

Leadership implies leading by setting an example. From the example set in our country it is small wonder that statistically we have but our geological scenic beauty to thank that tourists are still flocking here.

So let us thank our lucky stars that we have mountains, golden beaches, fynbos, game reserves and good climate because without that our leaders would be exposed for what they are.

Dink net hoeveel water loop weg terwyl jy tande borsel of groente was.

Mareli, Amandaglen

Berig oor verkragters het my geskok

[ Top ]

Hoe moet vroue nou maak?

Moet alle vroue nou by die huis bly?

Give yourself running start

Editorial

TO vote or not - that is the democratic choice of every citizen, and one that South Africans will have to make in the next few months.

However, there is a prerequisite to this choice (or privilege, as some may call it).

You must be registered as a voter to be eligible to make a cross behind the name of your preferred political party.

The past weekend saw more than 12 000 people in Drakenstein converging on voter stations to record their information with the Independent Election Commission.

While officials are quite pleased with the local results, there are still many people outside of the fold.

People should take note that they can still register at the Paarl town hall, as well as the municipal offices at Wellington and Saron on week days until the announcement of the election date.

As soon as the date is published in the Government Gazette, usually two days after the announcement, registration will be closed.

Many people may be disillusioned with political parties at this stage and may feel disinclined to vote.

However, a lot can still happen until election so ensure that you are on the voter's roll - give yourself a running start!
