[ Top ]

HUISMOLES.

Kaartjies is beskikbaar by Print Right (872-7209) teen R25 elk.  Saterdag is daar 'n middag-vertoning om 15:00 teen R20 per persoon.

Artist sees work in print

[ Top ]

A YOUNG Paarl artist has seen his work in print for the first time.

Thembinkosi Kohli  has studied art for a number of years at the Community Arts Project in Woodstock. Last year he was selected to attend a workshop for illustrators at UCT, where he was approached to illustrate a book for children.

The booklet illustrates the senses (smell, sight, hearing, touch and taste) and is titled "Let's go!" (Mashihambe!).

"In the illustrator's course we were encouraged to explore and reflect our environment in storytelling. I tried to reflect the township of Mbekweni where I grew up.

"I owe my success in a large extent to my mentor, artist Solomon Siko, who encouraged me in my career."

The booklets are published in three languages (English, Afrikaans and Xhosa) by the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa (Praesa) at UCT, and sponsored by the Netherlands Embassy and the Volkswagen Foundation. The text was written by Carole Bloch.

Thembi is now working at an artist's workshop in Paarl East, sponsored by an American foundation, and hopes that soon his work will be on sale in the USA.

"If I become famous, I will have reached my dream," says the shy young man who lives with his family in Mbekweni.

New play staged

[ Top ]

THE new play, "Ijumpile Lendaba", will be performed by the Desmond Tutu High School Drama Group with People's Productions in the school hall in Mbekweni tomorrow night.

The play looks at the unacceptable crime levels in the townships.

The story is about a group of young gangsters (Amarhanga Boys) who have crime connections with certain policemen.

Every time there are cases against "Amarhanga boys" those dockets are destroyed by policemen who are in cahoots with them, but then they start to double-cross one another.

The play was created by Thami Mbongo (who also directs) with co-writers Siyabulela Bin Mcitheka and Inathi Dingashe.

The play features fresh young talent from Desmond Mpilo Tutu High, Ihlumelo Junior Secondary and Mbekweni.

Mbongo hopes to take the production on a Boland tour. They also hope to perform at arts festivals at Peninsula Technikon and Artscape. For bookings phone Thando Baliso on 083-672-5830.

Madame: Ontraam

[ Top ]

Was "Model Mona" in werklikheid "Rebel Mona"?

Artists to look at Bain's Kloof

[ Top ]

ARTISTS from all over have an opportunity to participate in an art exhibition from 12 to 24 September entitled "The Glories of Bain's Kloof".

It will be part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Bain's Kloof Pass, a national monument, in September 1853 in Wellington.

Artists are invited to submit paintings, drawings, photographic prints or etchings for this exhibition.

In interpreting the theme "The Glories of Bain's Kloof", a liberal interpretation of related concepts, which may reflect the landscape, mountains, flora, fauna, geology and history of the area between the two entrances of the Pass (Darling Bridge to Antoniesvlei) are suggested.

The venue will be the Wellington Museum. Artists submitting works are not confined to residents of the Berg River Valley only.

Commission charges on sales (works may be sold) will be 20% and a nominal charge to cover expenses of R10 per submission will be levied.

Works should be mounted or framed and be within the size range A4 (210 x 300m) to A1 (600 x 840mm), with framed pictures ready for hanging (with two fish-eye screws in the back).

Each artist is allowed to submit up to six works.

A panel of independent art evaluators will select the works for display. Only art works displaying real artistry and reflecting an identifiable feature or characteristic of Bain's Kloof and its environs will be selected for display.

For practical reasons scholars up to and including Grade 12 are excluded, but all adults, college and university students are more than welcome to participate.

Enquiries to Leigh-Anne Wolfaardt (873-5978/082-963-9153) and Trevor Cleevely (072-728-0184).

Prospective exhibitors should complete an application form as early as possible, obtainable for the Wellington Tourism Bureau (873-4604), to assist with planning this event, particularly in the light of the limits on available hanging space.

Forms must be posted to 3 Cillié Street, Wellington 7655 or handed in at the Tourism Bureau.
