JUNE is Child Protection Month and next week, 2 to 6 June, is Child Labour Awareness Week.
A recent study, commissioned by the Department of Labour, revealed that 36% of children in South Africa under the age of 15 are involved in child labour, as defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The Congress of South African Trade Unions said this is totally unacceptable.
As well as putting children's lives, health and safety at risk and depriving them of opportunities for education, it also reduces jobs for adult workers.
The federation welcomed the Minister of Labour's assurance that the government has committed itself to eradicating child labour in the country by ratifying international instruments such as the ILO conventions on the minimum age for work and the worst forms of child labour.
The local Child Labour Intersectoral Group will do presentations at ten primary schools next week. Speakers will be from the Departments of Labour, Justice, Social Services, Health and the SAAPS.
The first meeting is on Monday 11:00 at Ronwe Primary and 12:30 at Sonop Primary. On Tuesday 09:00 they are at Bergendal and at 10:15 at Nieuwendrift Primary.
On Wednesday they visit Wes-Eind Primary at 11:00 and Wemmershoek at 12:00. On Thursday at 10:30 they are at Daljosaphat and 12:00 at Simondium,
