Soweto String Quartet

[ Top ]

ON Sunday and Monday the acclaimed Soweto String Quartet will open the February Fortnight of "Kings and Queens of Africa" at Spier, celebrating some of the great musicians to emerge from this continent.

As everyone knows, the Soweto String Quartet is not your average classical string quartet and their distinct sound has won them fans all over the world.

When their parents forbade the three Khemese brothers Sandile, Thami and Reuben to hang out on the hostile streets of Soweto, they turned to African choral music and learnt to play "those funny Eurocentric" instruments. With ease they mastered the violin and cello.

While the elder brothers Reuben and Sandile were playing in Aberdeen, Scotland in the late 1970s, their burgeoning talent was spotted and in 1980 they were given the chance to study music at the Darlington College of Arts in England.

After two years Reuben returned home and Sandile went to study for four years at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

In 1986, armed with new music skills and having been exposed to diverse cultures, languages and lifestyles, the three brothers came together again.

When their boyhood friend Makhosini Mnguni joined them on the viola, the Soweto String Quartet was born.

Bookings can be made through Computicket on 083-915-8000 or the Spier Box Office on 809-1165/77/78. Book online www.computicket.com or www.spier.co.za.

Babayan by La Motte

[ Top ]

Bespreek by Angela (876-3114/9).
