 Letters - Briewe

Isn't silence also a sign of consent?

[ Top ]

I CAN assure Ingrid Wolfaardt (Paarl Post 20 December) that many people are upset and shocked that yet another grocer will be on Main Street (the new Spar in Suider Paarl) and then opposite such beautifully designed old homes and in between prestige buildings like Absa Bank Suider-Paarl and the KWV Head Office.

For many years the precious municipal planning departments have allowed no less than 11 grocers and 14 garages on Main Street.

For several of the above buildings Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings were demolished. Unbelievable when neighbour towns jealously guard their precious buildings and ensure that newly erected buildings match the surrounding ones. Why not in Paarl?

After the Wisnekowitz shop on the corner of Main and Auret Street was demolished by a previous municipal council and there was a public outcry, we were assured that the Council is sensitive towards old buildings.

A few years ago a drivethrough hamburger restaurant was built opposite the entrance to Pastorie Avenue where historic buildings were restored at great cost.

The public were assured that this building would blend in with the surrounding buildings.

Now a technicolour playpen monstrosity has been attached to the Main Street side of the building. Does this blend with anything nearby?

Where is Paarl's watchdog - the aesthetics committee in the Town Planner's department? Where is SAHRA or do they only pay attention to developers who want to change buildings?

I haven't heard any objections from the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation.

Is Paarl being changed into a dump and the authorities hiding behind "you cannot stop progress" as the oldies used to say. Doesn't it mean 'Silence gives consent'?

Winkelsentrum hier is totaal onvanpas

[ Top ]

I am disgusted with Paarl supermarkets

[ Top ]

AS a farmer, I am very set on the quality of fresh produce, as well as expiry and sell-by dates. However, supermarkets seem to battle to keep up with quality and health control.

On numerous occasions, while doing my weekly grocery shopping, I have complained about expiry dates and potential health hazards, but there is no improvement.

I have a constant struggle in finding yoghurt, milk and pre-packed vegetables and fruit with decent expiry or sell-by dates.

Often, products are on the shelves with dates that have already expired. The sell-by dates normally do not leave much room for storage at home either.

Fresh produce is packed and sealed with no expiry- or sell-by dates and I have found pre-packed packets of lettuce with bugs or larvae inside or bell peppers that are mushy and brown.

I can't help but wonder about and fear the actions that take place in the storage rooms and in the kitchens of supermarkets!

On Friday 11 January I bought fresh peppered mackerel at Paarl Pick 'n Pay. The sell-by date indicated on the packet was for 27 January.

When I opened the packet at home, on Tuesday 15 January, I was overcome by an appalling, rotten smell! The bottom section of the meat had turned a strange, green colour and the fish was most certainly off.

I went to Pick 'n Pay immediately and asked to speak to the General Manager of the store, but he was out and so was the manager second in charge!

The managers, when available, always put the blame on the suppliers.

I say it is the duty of the section managers to control what goes on the shelves and over-see daily that the stock for sale is of good, healthy standard. I take my hat off to the managers of stores who do this.

Alinda van Dyk

David Smith (Senior Foods Buyer Western Cape for Pick 'n Pay) replies: Pick 'n Pay strives to keep customers in a happy environment, selling good quality and fresh foods. Our thanks to Mrs van Dyk for bringing her concerns to our attention.

After thorough investigation at the store it was found that packaging of the Peppered Mackerel was problematic and the stock was removed from sale. For this we have apologized to Mrs van Dyk.

The sell-by-dates for all the yoghurts was found to be in order.

With reference to a "decent-sell-by-date" on pre-packed produce it must be noted that in order to maintain quality, the sell by dates are on average two to three days only on pre-packed produce.

WHAT a wonderful feeling it is to stand in the queue and see all the happy faces, everybody hoping that they will become SA's newest millionaire. It really is your ticket to dream!

Never are you greeted by an angry face or unhappy people waiting to issue your lucky numbers.

Even greater is the feeling when you sit in front of the telly, discovering that you are one of the thousands of South Africans that have a reward to claim, whether big or small.

Unfortunately this is where the fairytale ends. Filled with enthusiasm and joy, you head off to your nearest lotto outlet to claim your prize, only to be greeted by a very grumpy owner.

"Go claim your prize where you bought the ticket", the reply comes. "You did not support my shop therefore I will not pay out your ticket".

You feel as if you stole the money somewhere and have no right to it. You have to turn around and walk away like a dog with its tail between its legs. It makes you feel afraid to ever win anything in the lotto again.

There should surely be something we can do about this. These unfriendly and unco-operative vendors should be acted against. Perhaps the people who administer the lottery can do something.

Why issue people with the necessary equipment if they are not willing to render the full services expected to go with it?

Alternatively we as consumers should be selective in the businesses we support.

This is indeed a sorry state of affairs

[ Top ]

IT is clear that the Berg River Arboretum opposite the Paarl Boys' High sportsgrounds is a popular chill-out destination. It is also clear that there are inadequate facilities to contribute to the overall sense of well-being.

That our fellow Paarlites should be subjected to relieving themselves behind bushes is a sorry state of affairs.

If the Municipality cannot finance facilities it becomes the common Paarl citizen's obligation to provide the necessities.

Beyond simple ablutions, perhaps general recreational facilities can be erected, maybe even a pavement-style bistro, Info-kiosk, stalls and amusement items for the kiddies.

Would this not be more attractive, uplifting and pleasing - becoming a tourist attraction and a local social spot?

Paarl Post se feite is telkemale korrek

[ Top ]
