Restoration beautifies new Hospice office |
|
|
 |
THE Paarl Hospice has moved into its new premises, the restored house at 109 Breda Street in central Paarl, which was opened by the Mayor of Drakenstein, Herman Bailey, on Monday evening.

The Hebrew Congregation offered a dilapidated property they owned at a substantial discount and the offer was immediately accepted.
The house was built in the first years of the previous century and on photographs dating from 1907, a door on the corner is visible. This had been bricked up. The task of restoration was tackled with enthusiasm by the Hospice Building |

Committee (HBC), consisting of Rob Koch, Dr Ati van der Leek and Kaufie Kaufman.
They approached Len Raymond to make the front door. On visiting the site he found many interesting features and provided valuable advice on the restoration.
As a result, the Drakenstein Heritage Foundation (DHF) became involved and helped where they could, also with a donation of R10 000 towards the project.
The Paarl 300 Foundation also took a keen interest through Dr Elzet Albertyn and saw this as a Community Project, donating R100 000. This generous donation injected renewed vigour into the activities of all involved.
Investigations have revealed that the house was originally built only in Breda Street, with the wing along Swartvlei street having been added later.
The original sash windows had external shutters and there was a small gable over the front door which has been restored according to the style of others in the area.
During restoration the steel window frames were removed and replaced with sash windows.
There was a length of "broekie lace" along the ridge of the roof of which a few parts remained. They have been taken down and used for moulds, so that the whole length can be re-installed.
The Hospice staff are excited and enthusiastic about the move to the spacious new building.
Hospice is unanimous in its praise for the people and businesses of Paarl (and further afield) for their generosity.
More than fifty individuals and companies have given their time, donated materials and even did sub-contract work, free of charge. A kind donor donated all the new roof sheets for the project.
A plaque is going to be installed in the building, listing all those who went the extra mile to make this such a worthwhile and successful project. |

Mense wat bydraes wil maak, kan vir Salwen Constable kontak by 083-231-3030 of Rosy Caleni by 082-937-0018. |

Every drop counts |

THE first week of August is World Breastfeeding Week. Human milk is the optimal food for any human baby, and provides antibodies and growth factors for healthy development.
This year we are also remembering orphans who traditionally have no access to breast milk, let alone the other comforts given by a loving mother.
Many new mothers find that one of their problems in the early days is having too much milk, until eventually the "demand-and-supply" system of suckling and milk production settles down.
Women who have extra breast milk can collect and donate this milk to other babies through the iThemba Lethu Human Milk Bank.
iThemba Lethu Human Milk Bank, using donated human milk for Aids orphans, was started in Durban. The concept has spread to the Western Cape, and the first orphanage-based human milk bank is about to open in Khayelitsha.
If donated milk is pasteurised (ie warmed at around 60 degrees for 30 minutes) then any viruses that might be present in the milk are killed.
"We are always looking for more donor mothers, since babies should be fed exclusively on human milk for the first six months of life, with solid foods being introduced slowly thereafter," says Jacquie Nutt of Wellington, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, and one of the driving forces behind the Milk Bank.
"This makes the demand for human milk on-going and increasing. Many of the donor mothers have said how good they feel to be able to contribute something to the huge escalating crisis of Aids orphans.
"It is a simple but satisfying process to donate breast milk, and one spin off is that our organisation can provide breastfeeding support and information to our donor mothers to help them with their own babies.
"Any quantity of milk is useful - our motto is 'Every drop counts'."
For further information on expressing and storing human milk, or to make a donation to the Milk Bank, please contact Jacquie on tel/fax 873-0004, or email preciousmilk@mweb.co.za.
There is a milk collection depot in Wellington, as well as in various areas of Cape Town. |

Help children's hospital |

A NEW Trauma Unit has been launched by the Red Cross Children's Hospital recently, the first stop for most children admitted to the hospital.
This unit is the only one of its kind in South Africa dedicated to children and last year they treated just under 40 000 trauma and medical emergencies, a phenomenal 109 per day.
They treat up to 138 000 children annually, of which 40% are from outside the Western Cape.
The types of trauma they treat include accidental (falls from bed, burns) and non-accidental (blunt fore, physical abuse).
Donations for the Trauma Unit appeal can be deposited into The Children's Hospital Trust account, Standard Bank account number 071-443-126, branch code 025-009. Fax a copy of the deposit slip to the Trust at 686-7861.

* The public has been invited to sponsor rooms at The Haven shelter. |
