STUDENTS from the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch will be exhibiting work submitted as entries for the annual Departmental Competition at the University Art Gallery (corner Dorp and Bird Street, Stellenbosch) from today until 10 October. The competiion has been named in memory of Dr Timo Smuts of Wellington. Dr Smuts served as head of the Fine Art division until his death in September 1999 and was widely admired as an artist, progressive thinker and teacher.
His life, art and teaching represented, on many levels, the artistic inclusiveness and resistance to dogma for which the Department has become known and respected.
The competition requires students to produce a work independent of any input from their lecturers. The exhibition will consist of work selected from these entries and a panel of three judges from outside of the Department will choose the prize-winners.
Three prizes will be awarded, one each to Applied Graphics, Fine Arts and Jewellery Design. |
