A WELL-KNOWN former Paarlite, lawyer Jac de Villiers (85) of Rondebosch, died on 11 September following an operation. De Villiers, a former mayor of Paarl and member of parliament, grew up on the family property Zomerlust in Paarl. He matriculated at Paarl Boys' High and joined his father, Smuts de Villiers, in his legal practice in Main Street. His grandfather founded the Paarl Rock brandy company in Main Street, of which Jac was chairman until it closed this year. He became a Paarl town councillor in the 1940's and organised the first wine festival in the Paarl Valley in 1951. With the proceeds of the festival, he founded the Paarl Publicity Association. He served on the Paarl Hospital Board and as mayor (1956-1957). In 1961 he was elected to the Provincial Council and in 1974, when he was elected Member of Parliament (UP) for Wynberg, he moved to Cape Town. He is survived by his wife Rein, daughter Jeanne Spencer and son Mark. The couple tragically lost two other children, John and Krina, many years ago. |

SO een keer 'n jaar maak die Klapmuts polisiestasie hul kraamkamerdeure oop. * A policewoman acted as midwife in Klapmuts. |
