New owner for Mont Rochelle |
|
|
 |
|
 |
WELL-KNOWN Franschhoek winery owner Graham de Villiers has sold the Mont Rochelle wine estate and is retiring from the wine trade.
According to de Villiers, he has retained a section of the 33 ha farm on which he will continue to run riding stables and a horse stud.
He will be consultant to the winery for 18 months "and then I can really retire."
De Villiers is a former chairman of the Vignerons de Franschhoek and of Wines of South Africa (Woza).
The winery has been sold for R17 million to a Johannesburg resident of Congolese extraction, Miko Rwayitare (58).
Rwayitare made his fortune as telecommunications entrepreneur when he developed the biggest cellphone company in Africa, Telecel, which now conducts business in 14 countries.
According to Rwayitare, he plans to build on the foundation laid by the previous owner and may make La Rochelle his Cape headquarters.
"I will see to it that Mont Rochelle will continue to prosper and develop into one of the foremost wine farms," he said.
The farm's winemaker, Justin Hoy, and manager Alwyn Geldenhuys will remain on the farm.
Rwayitare plans on using his international experience to market Mont Rochelle internationally as well as in the new Africa market. |

Wesgro welcomes golf development |
|
|
 |
THE proposed R1,3 billion development of the Pearl Valley Signature Golf Estate and Spa outside Paarl confirmed the leading role of the Western Cape tourism and leisure sector in attracting foreign investments, Peter Pullen, chief executive of Wesgro, the provincial trade promotion and investment agency, said this week. .

PROUD. At the site of the new entrance to the Pearl Valley golf estate, where indigenous trees are now being planted, are proud investors from left Azlan Ramli (executive director of MRCB), Musni Mohamad (general manager of MRCB) and Tahir Salie (executive director of Pearl Valley). |

 |
He said 31 or 15% of the foreign investment projects handled over the nine years to 2000 were tourism and leisure related, well ahead of technology-focused investments and petro-chemical and medical/health sector developments.
"Apart from showing confidence in the tourism and leisure sector, the establishment of a Jack Nicklaus signature golf estate is a |

significant boost for rural development, and job creation."
Pullen said the value of prospective foreign investment projects in the Western Cape was currently more than R1,5 billion.
"In this case, the Provincial Government and Trade and Investment South Africa were very supportive of efforts to attract this investment to the Western Cape," Pullen said.
The development is undertaken by the giant Malaysian property and media company Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), which first initiated the development more than two years ago. The launch was delayed until now due to the Asian stock market crash.
Pearl Valley will be sold on a plot and plan basis with a wide choice of styles suited to the overall architectural Pearl Valley theme. Roofs will be either thatch or slate and roads would be crushed river stone from the site.
Every plot adjoins and offers views of either fairways or greens or water features or all three, as well as views of the surrounding mountains.
Owners at Pearl Valley will have access to a wide array of recreational facilities including the golf course, clubhouse, business centre with office, restaurant, spa, swimming pool, floodlit tennis courts, squash court, gym, sauna, dam with water-sports, equestrian centre, horse trails, running and mountain bike trails, fishing and bowling greens.
Pearl Valley residents will also have access to the 42-hectare farm adjacent to the western boundary estate bordering on the Berg River and owned by the developers.
They also own the land on the northern border in order to protect Pearl Valley from other types of development. For enquiries, contact 864-0442. |

Green light for new shopping mall |
|
|
 |
|
 |
 |
|
THE Wijnland Plaza shopping centre planned near the tollgate on the N1 at Paarl has received the green light from the provincial administration.
The upmarket shopping centre of 55 000 square metres is to be constructed at a cost of about R300 million by developer Old Mutual Properties.
The entrance to the shopping centre, which will include a service station, will be in Jan van Riebeeck Drive, opposite the Paarl Golf Club. The proposal for the centre has gone through an exhaustive approval process by various provincial departments including nature conservation and agriculture.
It was originally opposed by the Cape Metropolitan Council because of its location outside the current Paarl municipal area, but both the Paarl town council and district council were in favour of the development. According to the planning consultant, Jan van Rensburg, detail planning can now go ahead, and contracts with anchor tenants can be finalised.
The centre will accommodate about 100 shops with 1800 parking bays on the landscaped bank of the Wildepaardejachts River and is due to open in 2002. The complex designed by the American company Development Design Group is likely to include cinemas and is expected to draw shoppers from as far as Worcester and Malmesbury. |

ingesamel is.

Many object to farm subdivision |
|
|
 |
MANY hurdles must still be overcome before the planned residential development on the farm Picardie in Suider Paarl is approved.
An environmental impact report is being finalised by the Department of Environmental Affairs, but the Department of Agriculture does not support the development, a municipal spokesman said this week.
The SA Heritage Research Foundation (Sahra) must also approve the rezoning for subdivision.
The developer, Syfin Properties, proposes developing 92 erven on the southern and eastern section (13 hectares) of the 22 hectare farm, which is zoned for single residential development.
Following objections from residents of Richelieu and Dumont Streets in Courtrai, the plans include using only the existing entrances in Laborie and Picardie Street.
Numerous objections have nevertheless been received from neighbouring land owners who fear increased traffic and loss of privacy. |
